A Tailored Approach for a Surgical Bone Tumor Resection

Khanh TRAN DUY

At the Morristown Medical Center, Dr. Yvette Ho, MD, FAAOS' team tackled their first case of bone tumor resection using our planning tools and cutting guide.

The tumor was located near critical structures, specifically in the greater trochanter region. Therefore, precision was essential to preserve as much healthy tissue as possible.

The decision to use a patient-specific cutting guide was not merely a "technological extra", but a huge benefit for the patient.

This approach ensured optimal alignment of the cuts while maintaining a 7mm safe margin around the tumor.

The surgery began with a careful exposure of the osteotomy site. The guide, designed for a lateral approach, was positioned and secured with three K-wires. Its design provided perfect stability while offering clear visual landmarks for the surgeon. This type of guide often includes removable "wings" to facilitate placement and adapt to complex anatomies.

The tumor was successfully extracted without any complications.

Great job!

Thanks Dr Ho for your trust and pleasant collaboration!
