Patient-Specific Planning for a Complex Pelvic and Sacral Tumor Resection

In recent weeks, our team supported a surgical unit during a demanding oncologic procedure: a combined resection of the sacrum and the right hemipelvis.This case was managed alongside Dr. Alexander Lazarides, who performed the operation with great precision.

Pelvic Tumor Resection: A Preoperative Plan Designed for Accuracy

The surgical approach involved a Type 1 posterior ilium resection using an extensile iliofemoral approach. The primary goal was to remove the tumor while preserving the acetabulum and the sacrum, two essential structures for pelvic stability and mobility.

To support this plan, a patient-specific 3D-CUT guide was created from CT and MRI data.Two dedicated guides were designed to secure the five planned cutting planes:– three on the pelvis,– two on the sacrum.

Each guide followed the preoperative planning with maximum precision.

How Patient-Specific planning & Guides Improve Surgical Precision

Throughout the procedure, the guide played a central role by allowing:

🔹 preservation of healthy bone around the tumor;

🔹 consistent control of surgical margins;

🔹 fewer intraoperative uncertainties, offering clear reference points for the surgical team.

This resection was part of a broader strategy involving reconstruction with a custom-made implant, making precise bone cuts essential for the next phase of treatment.

Coordinated Teamwork for Safer Bone Tumor Surgery

Thanks to careful preparation and strong coordination between teams, the resection was completed successfully while protecting structures crucial for stability and long-term function.

We extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Lazarides and his operating room team for their trust. It is a privilege to support them in making complex bone tumor procedures safer for their patients.
